Goal Setting Guidelines

We would like to share with you some goal setting guidelines to help you with setting and achieving your goals. Your success depends upon knowing the importance of goal setting, knowing how to set goals, following through to write goals down on a goal setting worksheet, and then working toward achieving those goals. We will talk about different goal setting techniques to help you set your goals and move forward to successful goal achievement.
"All successful people, men and women, are big dreamers.
They imagine what their future could be, ideal in every respect, and then they work every day toward their distant vision,
that goal or purpose."

- Brian Tracy
Goal Setting Guidelines - The Importance of Goal Setting
Setting and achieving goals is not for the lazy person. Even the setting of your goals can be challenging (That's why we've written these goal setting guidelines to help you). Then comes the work and discipline of achieving those goals. If you have a burning desire to accomplish greater things in life, then you're already ahead of most people. When you actually put your goals down on paper, you are well on your way to achievement of those goals.
"A dream doesn't become a goal until it is written." - Edwin Louis Cole
"A goal properly set is halfway reached." - Zig Ziglar
The main importance of goal setting is that your life will be enriched, not only with the achievement of the goals, but also through the work done and the discipline put forth in the process.
"The major reason for setting a goal is for what it makes of you to accomplish it. What it makes of you will always be the far greater value than what you get." - Jim Rohn
"We are at our very best, and we are happiest, when we are fully engaged in work we enjoy on the journey toward the goal we've established for ourselves. It gives meaning to our time off and comfort to our sleep. It makes everything else in life so wonderful, so worthwhile." - Earl Nightingale
Goal Setting Guidelines - Rules For Achievement
These goal setting guidelines should help you understand the necessary components of getting what you want. They will get you thinking through what it will take for you to achieve your goals in order to tailor your own plan for setting and achieving your goals.
There are six different characteristics of achieving your goals. You could also call these "rules" that you must obey or "processes" that you must go through in order to successfully achieve your goals.
  1. Your thought process - You must visualize yourself achieving your goals.
"Picture yourself in your minds eye as having already achieved this goal. See yourself doing the things you'll be doing when you've reached your goal." - Earl Nightingale
"If you want to reach a goal, you must "see the reaching" in your own mind before you actually arrive at your goal." - Zig Ziglar

  2. What you become in the process of achieving your goals is just as important (or more so) than the actual achievement of the goals."The discipline you learn and character you build from setting and achieving a goal can be more valuable than the achievement of the goal itself." - Bo Bennett

  3. Achieving your goals takes hard work and diligence."How do you go from where you are to where you wanna be? And I think you have to have an enthusiasm for life. You have to have a dream, a goal. And you have to be willing to work for it." - Jim Valvano

  4. You must keep your eye on the goal, not letting yourself become sidetracked by obstacles along the way.
"By prevailing over all obstacles and distractions, one may unfailingly arrive at his chosen goal or destination." - Christopher Columbus

  5. You must have a detailed plan of how you will reach your goals.
"Crystallize your goals. Make a plan for achieving them and set yourself a deadline. Then, with supreme confidence, determination and disregard for obstacles and other people's criticisms, carry out your plan." - Paul Meyer

  6. Set your goals high."You have to set goals that are almost out of reach. If you set a goal that is attainable without much work or thought, you are stuck with something below your true talent and potential." - Steve Garvey
